Unable to Install/Re-Install Importing Features in Access 97

I am trying simply to import an Excel file into Access 97, but the Excel spreadsheet is not a supported type. I tried adding it under Office 97 Setup EXACTLY as instructed, but despite uninstalling & reinstalling Office 97 twice, the option for Excel spreadsheet continues to be a "dim" choice. It keeps insisting that it's already installed, and it won't allow me to reinstall or even uninstall that option at all.

As such, I'm totally stuck. Is there anyway around this short of reformatting my hard drive & spending all day reconfiguring my entire hard drive from scratch?

VERY FRUSTRATED,
Larry

Larry,

I don't know if this is the "correct" way to do this, but itworked for me when I had this problem.

Look in your Windows\System directory for the files:
MSEXCL35.DLL
MSTEXT35.DLL
MSBSE35.DLL

I just renamed these files to something else (e.g. MSEXCL35xxxxx.DLL) and then setup allowed me to select this option and (re)install these data access files.
